Redditch was designated a new town in 1964, and much of what you see today was built over the following two decades. Districts such as Winyates and Matchborough were laid out as planned neighbourhoods of family homes. Alongside them are the older parts of town, such as Headless Cross, villages like Astwood Bank, and the varied housing of Webheath on the western side.

That history means a large share of Redditch homes date from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Their windows have a character of their own, and they suit some blinds better than others.

What new-town homes ask of a blind

Houses from Redditch’s expansion years often have wide living-room windows, open-plan ground floors and patio doors to the garden. Many will have swapped their original frames for uPVC at some point, and some have tilt-and-turn windows upstairs.

Start with the bathroom and kitchen

In many homes of this age, the bathroom is compact, with a single window close to the bath or shower. It’s a tough spot for a blind. Ordinary fabric absorbs moisture, and some slatted blinds can warp in the steam. Kitchens bring grease and splashes as well as steam. A faux wood Venetian blind gives the warm look of timber with slats that won’t warp, and you can tilt them to keep the sun off the worktop without losing all the light. The older side of town

Not every Redditch home is a new-town house. Headless Cross and Astwood Bank are older than the planned districts, with terraced streets and cottages among later homes. Windows here can have deeper recesses and less regular shapes, and many suit something softer, such as a Roman blind or a pair of lined curtains.
