Victorian villas, tall sash windows and terraces close to the pavement. We make shutters, blinds and curtains to fit Stourbridge's period homes, and its newer ones too.
Stourbridge has more than its share of period houses. Victorian and Edwardian homes line many of the roads around Wollaston and the town centre, Pedmore and, just over the Worcestershire border, Hagley have larger detached houses in generous plots, and Lye and Amblecote have streets of older terraces. Windows in homes like these were built to be looked at, and the dressings that suit them best tend to respect that.
That doesn’t mean everything has to be traditional. A crisp white shutter or a plain linen Roman blind can look just as right in a high-ceilinged Victorian room as in a new kitchen extension. What matters most is the fit, and older windows are rarely a standard size.
Older houses don’t make life easy for a blind or a shutter. A recess that looks even can narrow towards the top, sash boxes take up room inside the reveal, and plaster mouldings or old shutter boxes can sit exactly where a bracket would normally go. We measure every window ourselves, at more than one point, and plan the fitting around what’s really there. It’s the only way to get a neat finish on a frame that may have been in place for generations.
Many of the town’s terraces and older semis sit close to the pavement. Café-style shutters are fitted across the lower part of the window, which is the part passers-by can see into. Above them the glass is left clear, so the room keeps its daylight and you can still see the full shape of the sash. They look especially at home in a period dining room.
The bigger rooms of Pedmore and Hagley, with their tall sashes and wide bays, often suit tier-on-tier shutters. Each window gets an upper and a lower set of panels, hinged separately. On a bright afternoon you might fold the top set away and leave the bottom closed; at night, you shut the lot.
You can compare every style on our shutters page.
Not every period room wants shutters. In a bedroom or a snug, a lined Roman blind brings texture and warmth, with blackout and thermal linings available. Full-length made-to-measure curtains do justice to tall windows, and a voile hung behind them softens daylight and keeps the room private without making it gloomy. If you’re torn between shutters and fabric, tell us when you book and we’ll bring samples of both.
Stourbridge isn’t all period property. Norton and parts of Pedmore have plenty of 20th-century family homes, and there are newer houses across the town. In rooms with oak floors or modern furniture, wooden Venetian blinds add a warm, natural finish, and for uPVC windows a Perfect Fit blind clips into the frame with no drilling at all.
We cover the whole of Stourbridge and its surrounding villages, and we’re just as happy to visit homes in nearby Halesowen. If you have a tricky period window and want an honest opinion on what will suit it, we’d be glad to help.

Yes. Hagley is part of the DY9 postcode we cover, along with Pedmore, Lye and Norton. We also visit Wollaston and Amblecote, and homes across DY7 and DY8.
In most cases, yes. We measure each window ourselves and the shutters are made to those exact sizes, so small variations in an older frame can be allowed for. If a window isn't suitable, we'll tell you and suggest an alternative.
Café-style shutters leave the top sash clear, and the panels fold back when you want to open the lower one.
