Made-to-measure blinds

Blackout & Thermal Blinds

Light-blocking fabrics for rooms that need to be properly dark, with thermal options that help hold on to warmth when the blind is down.

Charcoal blackout blind in a calm, dark bedroom
  • Fabric that stops light

A dense, coated blackout fabric keeps out daylight and street light, rather than simply dimming it.

  • Thermal backing for colder months

On cold nights, a thermal fabric's insulating backing can help reduce heat loss through the glass.

  • Fitted to keep light gaps small

We look at every window to decide whether an inside-recess, outside-recess or Perfect Fit blind will let the least light creep round the edges.

  • Safe for children's rooms

Every blind meets BS EN 13120, the UK child-safety standard. Choose cordless operation or a chain held firmly by a tensioner.

Some rooms need to be properly dark. A bedroom that catches the sun at five on a summer morning, a nursery where naps happen in the middle of the afternoon, a spare room for someone coming home from a night shift, or a lounge where low winter sun washes out the television. An ordinary blind takes the edge off the light. A blackout blind is made to keep it out.

Our blackout blinds use a dense, coated fabric that light can’t pass through. Some fabrics are thermal as well, with a backing that can help reduce heat loss through the glass when the blind is down. That makes them a sensible choice for bedrooms that feel cold in the early hours, not just bright ones.

Where blackout blinds make the biggest difference

Bedrooms and nurseries

Street lamps, security lights and early sunrises all find their way into bedrooms. A blackout blind keeps the room dark at both ends of the day and through the summer evenings, when it can still be light long after a young child’s bedtime. Our guide to blackout blinds for nurseries has more ideas for children’s rooms.

Night shifts and early starts

If you work nights, your bedroom has to do its job at noon. A blackout blind fitted with a good overlap turns a bright room into somewhere that feels like evening, whatever the weather is doing outside.

Media rooms and home offices

Sun on a screen makes an afternoon film almost impossible to watch, and it’s no kinder to a laptop on a video call. Blackout fabric shuts the glare out completely, so the room works as a cinema or a quiet office whenever you need it to.

Getting the room as dark as possible

The fabric blocks light, but the way the blind is fitted decides how dark the room actually gets.

  • Inside the recess, a roller blind needs a little clearance at each side so it can turn freely. That can leave a thin line of light at the edges. It looks neat and suits most rooms.
  • Outside the recess, the blind overlaps the frame on every side, which cuts those edge gaps right down. For bedrooms where darkness matters most, this is usually what we suggest.
  • Perfect Fit blinds sit in their own slim frame clipped to uPVC windows, holding the fabric close to the glass with very little room for light to slip past.
  • Layering a blackout blind behind curtains with a blackout lining is the most effective way to darken a room, as the curtains catch whatever light gets round the blind.

Roller, Roman or Perfect Fit?

Style Best for Worth knowing
Blackout roller Most bedrooms and nurseries Slim when raised, with plenty of colours to choose from
Roman blind with blackout lining Bedrooms where you want a softer, tailored look The folds stack at the top, so it needs a little more height above the glass
Perfect Fit blackout uPVC and tilt-and-turn windows No drilling into the frame, and the blind stays in place when the window tilts open

How it works

  1. Book your measure. Phone or WhatsApp us, or send your details online. We’ll call you back within 24 hours and arrange a visit on whichever day of the week suits you.
  2. Free measure and advice. We measure each window, look at where light gets in around it, and show you blackout and thermal samples in the room itself. You won’t pay anything for the visit or the quote, and there’s no obligation to buy.
  3. Made for your windows. Your blackout blinds are made to measure, with the overlap or fitting position we agreed together.
  4. Fitted by our team. Our fitters come back to put them up and check each one hangs square and runs smoothly. Fitting is included in your quote.

Not every room needs full blackout. If you’re unsure whether a dim-out fabric would be enough for a lounge or study, ask at the visit. Our fitters have 20 years’ experience behind them, and they’ll give you a straight answer for each window, even if that means recommending a simpler blind.

Options

Make it yours

We'll talk you through every option at your free home visit, with samples in hand.

Blind style
Blackout roller blinds are the usual choice. Roman blinds with a blackout lining and Perfect Fit blackout blinds are also available.
Operation
A side chain kept taut by a child-safe tensioner, or a cordless spring mechanism with nothing hanging down.
Fitting position
Outside the recess with a generous overlap for the darkest room, or inside the recess for a tidier, built-in look.
Colours
Soft whites, greys and neutrals as well as navy and charcoal. Because the light-blocking layer is in the fabric, a pale blind still keeps the light out.

Questions

Blackout & Thermal Blinds: common questions

Anything else you'd like to know? Call or WhatsApp us on 07902 945533.

What's the difference between blackout and thermal blinds?

Blackout fabric is made to stop light passing through. Thermal fabric has an insulating backing that can help reduce heat loss through the window. Some fabrics do both, and we'll point those out among the samples at your home visit.

Do blackout blinds help in summer as well?

They can. Lowering the blind on a sunny afternoon stops the sun beating straight through the glass, which can help a sun-facing bedroom feel more comfortable by bedtime.

Are blackout blinds safe for a nursery?

Yes. All our blinds meet BS EN 13120. For a nursery we usually suggest a cordless blind, or a chain fixed to the wall with a tensioner. It's also sensible to keep cots and beds away from the window.

How should I clean a blackout blind?

A regular dust, or a gentle pass with a vacuum brush, keeps it looking fresh. Spot-clean marks with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking the fabric, as heavy wetting can damage the light-blocking coating.
