Made-to-measure shutters

Café-Style Shutters

Shutters on the lower part of the window only. Privacy where you need it, with the top left open for daylight and sky.

Café-style shutters on the lower half of a kitchen window
  • Privacy at eye level

The lower part of the window is screened from passers-by and neighbours, while the top stays clear.

  • Keeps rooms bright

With nothing covering the upper glass, daylight reaches further into the room than it would with a full shutter.

  • Set at the height you need

We position the top of the shutter to line up with your window bars or to screen a particular view.

  • Light and uncluttered

A smaller panel feels relaxed rather than formal, and leaves room for a blind or curtains above if you want them.

Café-style shutters cover only the lower part of the window. The top is left open, so daylight floods in and you can still see the sky, while the bottom gives you privacy from the street, the pavement or the house next door. The name comes from the shutters often seen in café windows, and the easy, uncluttered look they create translates well to the home.

It’s a simple idea that solves a common problem. Many rooms only need privacy up to a certain height. A full shutter can feel like more than the window needs, especially on a small kitchen window or in a room that’s already short on light.

Where café-style shutters work well

  • Kitchens. They screen the sink and worktops from view without shutting out the light you need for cooking.
  • Front rooms in terraced houses. In many Victorian and Edwardian terraces, front windows sit only a few steps from the pavement. Café shutters stop passers-by looking straight in while keeping the room bright.
  • Dining rooms that are overlooked at ground level.
  • Ground-floor flats, where the main concern is people walking by.

The honest trade-off

Because the top of the window stays open, café-style shutters won’t darken a room and they don’t cover the window completely after dark. In most kitchens and dining rooms, that’s not a problem. For a bedroom, or a living room where you want full cover in the evening, there are two good answers:

  1. Add a blind above. A roller blind or Roman blind at the top of the window can be lowered at night and tucked away during the day.
  2. Choose tier-on-tier instead. Tier-on-tier shutters give you the same privacy on the lower half during the day, but the top panels close too when you need them.

If you like the idea but would rather have a blind, a pleated blind with a top-down, bottom-up option can cover the lower part of a window in a similar way.

Getting the height right

The height of a café shutter makes a big difference to how it looks and how well it works. On sash windows, lining it up with the meeting rail gives a tidy, deliberate look. On casement windows with a horizontal bar, that bar is the natural line. Where there’s no obvious line to follow, we’ll look at the view in from outside and the way you use the room, then suggest a height that blocks what it needs to and looks balanced from both sides.

Finishes and details

Café-style shutters come with the same choices as our other shutters: a range of louvre sizes, painted or stained finishes, and an optional hidden tilt rod. On a smaller panel, slimmer louvres often look more in proportion, but we bring samples so you can compare them on the window itself.

Because each one is made to measure, they suit older windows where the recess isn’t quite square. Every panel is built to the sizes taken in your home.

How it works

  1. Ask for a visit. Call, WhatsApp or send us a quote request. We can come out on any day of the week, at a time to suit you.
  2. Find the right height. We measure the window, work out the height that gives you privacy and bring finishes to try against it. The quote is free and you’re under no obligation.
  3. Made for that window. Your shutters are made to the exact measurements.
  4. Fitted in place. We return to fit them and check that each panel swings and tilts smoothly. Fitting is included in your quote.

Café-style shutters are a small change that can make a room feel brighter and more private at the same time. With 20 years’ experience across Birmingham and the West Midlands, we’ll tell you honestly whether they’re right for your window, or whether another style would serve you better.

Options

Make it yours

We'll talk you through every option at your free home visit, with samples in hand.

Shutter height
Often in line with a transom or sash rail, but it can be set wherever gives you the privacy you want.
Louvres
Slim louvres look neat on small kitchen windows. Wider louvres open up more of the view when tilted.
Finish
Painted to match your woodwork and walls, or stained for a warmer, natural look.
Tilt control
A hidden tilt rod keeps the front of the panel clean. A visible rod gives a more traditional look.

Questions

Café-Style Shutters: common questions

Anything else you'd like to know? Call or WhatsApp us on 07902 945533.

Can café-style shutters go in a bay window?

Yes. Each section of the bay gets its own lower panel, joined at the angles, which leaves the whole top of the bay open to the light.

Do café-style shutters open?

Yes. The panels are hinged, so they fold back when you want to open the window or clean the glass. The louvres also tilt for finer control.

Can people see in from above?

From the pavement, the lower panel screens most of the room. Someone looking down from higher up, such as an upstairs window across the road, may still see in through the open top.

How do café-style shutters compare with net curtains?

Both give privacy on the lower part of the window without blocking all the light. Shutters feel firmer and more tailored, and their louvres can be tilted. Voiles and nets are softer and lighter. We supply both, so we can show you each at your visit.
