Large homes in Four Oaks, Edwardian bays in Boldmere and Wylde Green, family houses in Walmley and Mere Green. We bring samples to you, then make and fit everything to measure.
Sutton Coldfield is officially part of Birmingham, but it has a character all of its own, and its homes tend to be on the generous side. Four Oaks has large detached houses set on wide plots. Boldmere and Wylde Green have Edwardian and interwar semis and terraces, many with bay windows. Walmley and Mere Green are mostly later suburban homes, with newer developments around the edges. Bigger rooms and bigger windows change what works best, so rather than walk you through every road, here’s how we’d approach each room.
In Boldmere and Wylde Green the front room usually centres on a bay. Tier-on-tier shutters are a smart choice here: the top and bottom sections open independently, so you can fold back the top for daylight and keep the lower panels closed for privacy from the pavement. Full-height shutters give a cleaner, single-panel look and suit taller windows where you don’t need the split.
In the larger houses around Four Oaks, wide windows and high ceilings can carry full-length made-to-measure curtains beautifully. Interlining gives them weight and fullness, and can help reduce heat loss through the glass on cold evenings. Many people layer curtains over shutters or a blind to get the best of both: crisp light control by day, warmth and softness at night.
Upstairs, many of Sutton’s Edwardian and interwar houses repeat the bay of the room below, which makes the main bedroom bright and airy but hard to darken on summer mornings. Shutters cut out a great deal of light, but they’re not fully blackout, because a little always creeps in around the louvres and panel edges. If total darkness matters, a blackout blind fitted inside each pane, with curtains or shutters in front, is the most reliable answer. We’ll talk through the trade-off honestly at your visit.
In newer homes in Walmley and Mere Green, bedroom windows are usually simpler uPVC casements. A blackout roller blind in the recess is often all you need, with a dim-out fabric for rooms where you’d like some light to come through.
With bigger houses often comes a dedicated study. Wooden Venetian blinds bring warmth and texture to a home office, and tilting the slats cuts glare on a screen without shutting out the day. They suit the solid, traditional feel of many Sutton homes.
Real wood isn’t the right choice right next to a sink or a steamy hob, though. In the kitchen we’d usually suggest a faux wood Venetian or a wipe-clean roller blind instead, and we’ll say so even if you came to us asking for timber.
If your house has a rear extension or garden room with large glazed doors, vertical or panel blinds handle wide openings well and slide fully clear when you want to walk through. You can see every shutter style on our shutters page, which is a good place to start if you’re weighing them up against blinds.
We cover the whole of B72 to B76. In a larger house, a measure can take a little longer, because we’ll look at every room you want doing and suggest how shutters, blinds and curtains might work together from one floor to the next. Our fitters bring samples, so you can hold a shutter panel up to an Edwardian bay or compare curtain fabrics in your lounge before you decide.
